Opening your Account

How to open a Current Account?

Are you a member already?
You can open a Current Account in your Local Branch or within your Online Banking area if registered for this service.
Not a member yet?
It’s easy to become a member and open a Current Account, visit your Local Branch with the below documents:
1 x Proof of Identification,
1 x Proof of PPS Number,
1 x Proof of Address.

Can I open a Joint Current Account?

Yes, both members can open a Joint Account, receive Current Account Debit Cards, Online Banking and In-App Banking access.

When will I receive my Current Account BIC and IBAN?

Once your account has been approved you will receive a text message, you will then receive your BIC and IBAN by post within three working days. Your BIC and IBAN can also be retrieved within your Online Banking and In-App Banking areas once you have receive the text message.

When will I receive my Debit Card?

Once your account has been approved you will receive a text message, then your card is on its way! You will receive your card within 7-10 working days.

How to get my wages paid into my Current Account?

To get your wages paid into your new Current Account, provide your new BIC and IBAN to your employer. Once your account has been approved you will receive a text message, you will then receive your BIC and IBAN by post within three working days.Your BIC and IBAN can also be retrieved within your Online Banking and In-App Banking areas once you receive the text message.

What is the difference between a Standing Order and Direct Debit?

Standing Order:
A Standing Order is where you have authorised a fixed amount at regular intervals to be sent from your account.
Example: You have set up your Current Account to transfer €50 weekly to a Savings Account using the BIC and IBAN for the Savings Account.

Direct Debit:
With a Direct Debit, you have authorised the collection of money directly from your account whenever a payment is due.
Example: A utility provider collects payment from your account at the payment due date using the BIC and IBAN of your account.

How to transfer your payments?

You will need to identify if your payments are Standing Orders or Direct Debits. You can find this out from the Financial Institution you are switching from.

Standing Orders can be easily Set up within the Athenry Credit Union Online Banking area. Standing Orders can also be set up at any of our Local Branches

Making a change to a Direct Debit

Provide your new Current Account BIC and IBAN details to Direct Debit recipients.

Will I have Online Banking and In-App Banking with the Credit Union?

Yes, when you open a Current Account you will receive your Online Banking and In-App Banking login details.

Where can the Debit Card be used?

The Debit Card can be used worldwide at anywhere that accepts card payments or at any ATM that accepts all card types!

How to apply for an Overdraft?

Members with a Current Account can apply for an Overdraft in-branch or within the Athenry Credit Union Online Banking area.
